History of KL Tower

From telecommunications project to icon of Kuala Lumpur's skyline

1991

Project begins

Work begins on October 4, 1991, with land preparation, Jalan Punchak expansion, and initial excavation work. The tower was primarily conceived as an advanced telecommunications and broadcasting center, although from the start it was also envisioned as a new landmark for Kuala Lumpur.

1992

Foundation construction

In July 1992, one of the most important phases of the project begins: the construction of the foundations and basement. During these works, approximately 50,000 cubic meters of concrete were poured continuously for 31 hours, setting a record for the Malaysian construction industry.

1994

The tower reaches 421 meters

In May 1994, the construction of the superstructure begins, including the large central shaft and the top part. On September 13, 1994, the antenna mast is installed, with which the building definitively reaches its 421 meters height.

1994

Architecture inspired by Islamic tradition

The interior design combines modern technology with elements inspired by Islamic architecture. One of the most notable examples is found in the main lobby, where the glass domes use shapes inspired by muqarnas, a traditional ornamental element of Islamic art.

July 1996

Opens to the public

On July 23, 1996, it opens its doors to visitors and quickly becomes one of Kuala Lumpur's major tourist attractions.

October 1996

Official inauguration

On October 1, 1996, the official inauguration takes place, led by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad.
